Giving a Voice to Important Issues

Alyssa Gould hopes to shed light on important issues鈥攍ike homelessness and the challenges facing Indigenous peoples鈥攄uring her summer internship at CBC鈥檚 Fredericton office.

Gould, of Moncton, NB, is in her fourth year of at St. Thomas and is looking to put the skills she鈥檚 earned in reporting, broadcasting, and radio to work.

鈥淲orking at the CBC is going to help me build confidence in the skills I鈥檝e gained at 黑料老司机,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to working with established journalists and being able to give a voice to people who might not have the courage to speak up.鈥

Gould begins work with the CBC in mid-May, and while she鈥檚 willing to produce content in all forms she鈥檚 hopeful she will get the opportunity to work in radio.

鈥淚 love working in radio. I鈥檝e been told I have a 鈥榬adio voice,鈥 but I also like the fact it鈥檚 all about what you鈥檙e putting on the air,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nything to do with sound is up my alley. Radio is definitely my strong suit and I learned that at 黑料老司机.鈥

On top of her technical skills, Gould believes her ability to approach issues with an open mind will benefit her as a journalist.

鈥淭he way of thinking I鈥檝e developed here is what I鈥檒l bring to the CBC. Looking into issues in different ways and from different perspectives is hard to do, but I feel like I鈥檝e been taught how to do that,鈥 she said.

鈥淧rofessors make the program; we鈥檙e really lucky here鈥

Gould came to St. Thomas after completing a summer job with the City of Moncton where she worked closely with the Communications Department. After taking courses in and , Gould said she found her niche.

The highlight of her time in the program was the senior seminar with Professor .

鈥淲e did a year-long project on Indigenous peoples, the Jemseg Crossing, and what鈥檚 going on with Sisson Mines, and I鈥檝e learned so much from that,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much to be taught and there鈥檚 so much to be learned on these issues. It was a really awesome project.鈥

The opportunity to work closely with professors鈥攎any of whom are currently working in the field鈥攈ad an impact on Gould鈥檚 experience.

鈥淚鈥檓 very thankful for all my professors, but especially my Journalism profs,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he professors make the program; we鈥檙e really lucky here. They have awesome people teaching and that鈥檚 made a world of difference.鈥
