St. Thomas University Moot Court had another successful season of regional competition, earning 12 speaker awards and three bids to the American Moot Court Association National Tournament in Louisiana.

 

Husoni Raymond and Elizabeth Tuck, Brandon Case and Olivia Ricketts, and Grace Baker and Megan Cormier will represent St. Thomas at the national competition where they will compete against the best mooters in the American Moot Court Association.

  

ORLANDO REGIONAL

The ������˾�� Moot Court team had its greatest success in Orlando, where Raymond and Tuck were crowned tournament champions after besting the University of Central Florida in the final round.

 

Case and Ricketts punched their ticket to the national tournament after advancing to the semi-finals, and Laura Rea and Kyle McNally advanced to the quarter-finals but fell just short of qualifying for nationals.

 

“Last year, I didn’t qualify for nationals and it became my goal this year,” Case said. “Being one of the highest ranked teams at our competition is something I’m happy to have achieved.”

 

Four ������˾��dents earned speaker awards at the event—Rea was 2nd overall, McNally was 10th, Case was 19th, and Raymond was 20th.

   

TOMMIES' TOURNAMENT 

At their home tournament—the first American Moot Court Association regional to be hosted in Canada—the ������˾�� mooters earned one bid to nationals, had one team advanced to the quarterfinals and two teams advance to the Top 16.

“Competing in the classrooms you recognize was very comforting and helped with confidence because you knew you were representing your school on your home turf,” Cormier said.

Baker and Cormier secured their spot in Louisiana after making it to the semi-finals, while Emma Ruiz and Graci Young were one round away from qualifying in the quarter-finals.

 

“At Nationals I’m mostly looking forward to meeting other students like myself who work hard and have a passion for mooting,” Cormier said. “Being able to represent ������˾�� in Louisiana alongside two other ������˾�� teams has exceeded all of my expectations.”

The hosts also took home three speaker awards: Emma Dufour was 5th overall, Jenicca Jean was 6th, and Dane Rose was 12th.

 

 EASTERN REGIONAL

At the Fitchburg regional, five ������˾�� Mooters were among the top 15 speakers.

Matt Oram was 2nd overall, Alaina Mejia was 5th, Sarie Durelle was 6th, Victoria Loucks was 7th, and Oliver Larson was 13th.

 

The American Moot Court Association National Tournament is set for January 17-18 at the Southern University Law Centre in Baton Rouge, LA.

 

“The national tournament is very competitive. I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge it provides,” Case said. “With the reputation ������˾�� has built in moot court, I’m looking forward to being able to compete against the best.”
